AGREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY

LIFE IN DURHAM

Halfway between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Atlantic shore, Durham is home to over 300 restaurants, more than 40 annual festivals, world class medical facilities, Duke and North Carolina Central universities, Bulls baseball, art and science museums, and world-class medical facilities and much more.

Local events in and around Durham include jazz festivals, plays, blues festivals, symphony concerts, art exhibitions, and a multitude of cultural expositions, including the American Dance Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. A center of Durham’s culture is its Carolina Theater, which shows both live performances and films, primarily independent releases.

Notable dining establishments are primarily concentrated in the Ninth Street, Brightleaf, and University Drive areas—all only a few short minutes away from your new home at Independence Park. Durham is also experiencing a resurgence of restaurants in and around the Downtown Area, including several new restaurants in the American Tobacco Historic District. The Nasher Museum of Art (4.3 miles and about 10 minutes away) opened in October 2005 and has produced nationally-recognized traveling exhibitions of global, contemporary art.

VIBRANT CITY ON THE MOVE

The Durham Association for Downtown Arts (DADA) is a non-profit arts organization located in the downtown area. It was founded in 1998 and then incorporated in 2000. The organization’s mission is a commitment to the development, presentation and fiscal sponsorship of original art and performance in Durham. DADA strives to support local artists working in a diversity of artistic media. Emphasizing community, DADA helps local residents gain access to these artists by providing free or low-cost venue admission.

Durham is home to the nationally known Scrap Exchange, the largest nonprofit creative reuse arts center in the country. As a testament to its love and support for the arts, downtown Durham sponsors an organically grown celebration of culture and arts on display every 3rd Friday.

Durham loves collegiate sports, and Duke University’s men’s basketball team regularly sells out home games at Cameron Indoor Stadium (only 7.8 miles and 13 minutes away) where the Cameron Crazies have built a national reputation for their chants and rowdiness. Duke competes in a total of 26 sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

This is also the proud home of Triple-A Minor League Baseball’s Durham Bulls and their Durham Bulls Athletic Park (only 4.3 miles and 11 minutes away) on the southern end of downtown, where games draw around 500,000 cheering spectators each year.

Home for Technology, Medicine, and Global Advancement

Only a short distance from your new home at Independence Park, the Research Triangle Park (RTP) has been a driving force behind the evolution of Durham into a thriving, global center for information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medicine. The City of Durham is known as the “City of Medicine,” with healthcare as a major industry including more than 300 medical and health-related companies and medical practices with a combined payroll exceeding $1.5 billion annually.

Also only a short drive from your new home, Duke University, founded in 1924, has grown into one of the most prestigious private universities in the world with a medical center that ranks annually among the top in the nation. Duke is the largest employer in Durham, providing jobs for more than 18,000 residents. It’s another short commute to North Carolina Central University (NCCU), which has recently embarked on an ambitious plan for growth, particularly in the area of biotechnology research. Durham Technical Community College rounds out the community’s post-secondary educational institutions and offers traditional academic and vocational training as well as customized programs to meet changing industry needs.
